Build a film series around a local partner and shared action
A civic partner can bring expertise, activities and routes to local audiences. Give each screening a useful next step and measure who comes back.
Published 30 October 2026
The idea
Build a recurring programme with a partner whose work gives audiences a reason to gather and take part.
Evidence
Ann Arbor’s sustainability office and Marquee Arts announced a free Cinema and Sustainability series at Michigan Theater. The city lists four screening dates from November to March, small Climate Cafés before the November and December films, family matinees in February and March, and staff-led activities at each event. The cafés require separate registration because places are limited.
Operator takeaway
A partner can contribute subject expertise, facilitation and routes to local audiences. The film remains the centre of the occasion, while a small optional activity gives people a useful way to participate.
Try this
Start with three or four dates and a partner with an identifiable community. Agree the programme, funding, staffing, booking process and one relevant activity per event. Keep discussion optional and book its places separately from cinema tickets. Give attendees a clear route to the next screening, and explain how free places are funded and how unused reservations will be released.
Measure
Track reservations versus attendance, first-time visitors, discussion participation, later bookings, partner referrals and cost per attended screening. Include staff time and partner support when assessing the economics.
Watch out for
Attendance, repeat visits and the value of the sponsorship are not published. Four dates are listed, with no January screening confirmed. A free reservation is not an attended visit, and an attended discussion does not establish a later change in behaviour.
Operator and timing
Michigan Theater, Ann Arbor (Michigan, United States), operated by Marquee Arts, with the City of Ann Arbor as sponsor. Announced 21 October 2026; screenings listed for 5 November and 3 December 2026, then 7 February and 28 March 2027. Sources reviewed 30 October 2026.
Resources
A named partner lead, agreed funding and delivery responsibilities, a facilitator, separate booking capacities and a simple follow-up plan.
