Operator Briefing

The idea

Turn a proven festival programme into a portable package that another city or host can deliver with low programming risk.

Evidence

Official festival pages document the first Houston edition, the reused programme, sliding-scale pricing, open captions, ASL interpretation, audio description and published venue access.

Operator takeaway

The transferable asset is the package — cleared films, access assets and a host brief — not the original event.

Try this

Assemble a touring pack containing cleared films, access assets, a running order, discussion guide, venue-access checklist and a simple host agreement.

Measure

Track host enquiries and conversion, audience composition, access-service usage, delivery cost and repeat-host interest.

Watch out for

Rights must be cleared for each host and date, and access equipment and technical support need a named owner.

What they are doing

After more than two decades in Austin, Cinema Touching Disability presented its first Houston edition on 1 August 2026 in partnership with Houston Christian University. It reused winning shorts from the previous Austin festival rather than building an entirely new programme.

Why it caught our attention

The festival’s value is made portable. A curated, access-equipped programme can reach another city with lower programming risk, while the wider organisation offers previous festival line-ups for collaborative screenings at schools, businesses and community organisations.

How the model works

The Houston event used sliding-scale tickets from $5, complimentary tickets where cost was a barrier, open captions on every film, ASL interpretation for spoken content and live audio-description devices. Venue information covered seating, surfaces, parking and the absence of concessions.

What another cinema might adapt

Build a touring package containing cleared films, access assets, a running order, discussion guide, speaker brief, venue-access checklist, marketing templates, price and comp policy, and a simple host agreement.

Questions to consider

Are rights cleared for each host and date? Who supplies access equipment and technical support? How much local adaptation is useful? Which elements must remain consistent to protect the festival identity?

What is currently known

The official festival pages document the first Houston event, programme, pricing, access provision and a wider offer for year-round collaborative screenings.

What has not yet been reported

Houston attendance, access-service usage, financial result and host conversion have not been published. The portable model is visible; its scale and economics remain open.
