Let audiences choose the next cinema snack
TOHO Cinemas invited audiences to choose between four staff-devised popcorn flavours. Its 9 October announcement names plum-and-bonito as the winner, with limited-quantity national sales planned from 14 November 2026.
Published 14 October 2026
The idea
Connect audience participation to a real product decision, using a feasible shortlist supplied by cinema staff.
Evidence
Web and social voting ran from 7 August to 6 September 2026 on four flavours devised by staff at anniversary cinemas. TOHO announced ume-katsuo (plum-and-bonito) as the winner on 9 October. Limited-quantity sales are planned nationally from 14 November 2026.
Operator takeaway
The vote and result are observed; the product launch is still scheduled. No sales uplift, margin or retention result is established.
Try this
Shortlist two or three feasible flavours, invite a vote, publish the result and test a limited batch. Agree supply, preparation, allergens and contribution before opening the vote.
Measure
Valid votes, subsequent product purchases, contribution, waste and repeat purchases; distinguish participation from additional cinema visits.
Watch out for
The winning product is not yet on sale at this review. Self-selecting voters are not a demand forecast, and no vote total is supplied by the reviewed source.
Operator, market and timing
TOHO Cinemas, Japan. Voting: 7 August–6 September 2026. Result announced: 9 October. Product sales planned: 14 November 2026. Reviewed 14 October 2026. This updates an existing unpublished CIA draft; it is first published in the international supplement.
From staff shortlist to audience choice
Staff at TOHO’s anniversary cinemas devised four popcorn flavours for a web and social vote. The published result identifies ume-katsuo, or plum-and-bonito, as the winner. TOHO plans to sell it in limited quantities nationally from 14 November 2026. The result is published, but the product launch is not a completed outcome.
Why the connection matters (CIA interpretation)
A vote has a tangible endpoint when customers can subsequently try the selected product. Staff involvement can bring practical counter knowledge to the shortlist, but it does not prove that every suggestion is inexpensive or easy to prepare. Participation and eventual buying remain different behaviours.
A manageable adaptation (CIA suggestion)
Test two or three operationally feasible flavours. Before inviting votes, agree ingredients, supplier availability, preparation at peak, allergen information and margin. Explain when the winner will be offered, publish the result and make a limited batch rather than assuming a permanent new line is justified.
Resources and risks
Plan staff preparation, stock, food safety and a voting route. Risks include ingredient waste, longer queues, novelty purchases replacing the standard line and treating a self-selected vote as representative demand. These are CIA implementation considerations, not reported TOHO procedures.
Measures and what remains unknown
Count valid votes separately from product purchases. Measure product contribution, waste and repeat purchasing. Where consent and systems permit, compare voter take-up with other customers without assuming causation. The source supplies no vote total, sales uplift, margin or retention outcome.
