Reward the fourth visit, not the third purchase

Showcase's See 3 and Go Free promotion asks loyalty members to combine a paid ticket and a food and beverage purchase on three separate visits before earning a free ticket for a later redemption period.

Operator Briefing

The idea

Structure a loyalty reward so that it creates a future visit rather than discounting the transaction the customer is already making.

Evidence

Observed example. The mechanic is published in the programme rules; no results have been published.

Operator takeaway

A reward delivered later, in a defined window, is an attempt to engineer the next visit instead of the current one.

Try this

Run a qualifying-visit promotion with a deferred reward window and compare it against an immediate third-visit discount.

Measure

Members entering, qualification rate, food and beverage spend across qualifying visits, fourth-visit redemption and the fifth visit after the reward.

Watch out for

Some qualifying visits would have happened anyway; without a control group the scheme can look more incremental than it is.

What they are doing

During a qualifying period, a Starpass member makes a paid admission and buys at least one food or beverage item, on three separate visits, with only one qualifying transaction counting each day. The reward is not used immediately: a free general-admission ticket becomes available during a later redemption window. Premium surcharges remain payable and free admissions do not count towards qualification.

Why it caught our attention

The scheme links three things at once — repeat visits, food and beverage attachment, and a later fourth visit. It therefore tries to engineer future behaviour rather than simply discounting the third transaction.

How the mechanism works

Qualification is defined by behaviour, not spend thresholds. The daily cap prevents members qualifying in a single day, and the deferred redemption window moves the reward into a period the operator wants to fill.

What another cinema might adapt

Set the qualifying behaviour to whatever you actually want more of — midweek admissions, a food and beverage item, or a specific format — and place the redemption window in a period you know is soft.

Questions to consider

What is the reward liability if everyone qualifies? Does the deferred window fall in a period you want busier, or one that is already full?

What could be measured

Members entering, qualification rate, average food and beverage spend across qualifying visits, fourth-visit redemption, fifth visit after the reward, incremental contribution, reward liability and the share who would have visited anyway.

What is currently known

The mechanic and its rules are published by the operator.

What has not yet been reported

No results have been published. Visits should not be described as incremental unless that has been demonstrated with a control group.
